Taurine in baby formula

I am writing this post of all the moms out there who are bottle feeding and wonder why their kid is so hyper! Let me get to the story:

I have an 11 old week baby and he is such an easy boy. A few weeks after his birth, I was seeing that he had lots of energy.

He was 3 weeks old and already trying to climb on things. He would fight the swaddle all night and manage to get out or fight his hands if he wasn’t swaddled. He wouldn’t nap or sleep for long periods of time. As time passed by, he wouldn’t really cuddle that much because he couldn’t stand still. I kept watching other babies (because this is my first) and noticed that mine was a lot more energetic and alert.

I had read a book called “twelve hours by twelve weeks” training your baby to sleep 12 hours by twelve weeks. I have such a good baby that we were right on schedule. Yet, something was off. He could never really settle.

My mom started to be mad at me telling me that I needed to put him down more often on his play mat or rocker to play by himself. I couldn’t. He was so antsy all the time. He would bicycle so hard with his feet! Everybody who would meet him kept saying how energetic he was and squirmy.

I kept googling what could have been wrong with him. Reflux? Gaz? Hunger? He wasn’t showing any of these signs…

And as I was talking with my mom on the phone, she literally had a flash back of a conversation she had with a dad last year. (My mom is a nurse and that dad too). Her daughter was switched to formula and started to be super nervous. She couldn’t settle, couldn’t sleep for long… and that was bugging him. So, one day, he took the can of formula and look at the ingredients. TAURINE! What!?? Taurine is found in lots of energy drinks theses days; like Red Bull.

Now, Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein. Taurine is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets. The best food sources are meat and fish.

You may see taurine referred to as “a conditional amino acid,” to distinguish it from “an essential amino acid.” A “conditional amino acid” can be manufactured by the body, but an “essential amino acid” cannot be made by the body and must be provided by the diet. People who, for one reason or another, cannot make taurine, must get all the taurine they need from their diet or supplements. For example, supplementation is necessary in infants who are not breastfed because their ability to make taurine is not yet developed and cow's milk does not provide enough taurine. So taurine is often added to infant formulas. (source WebMD)

And it’s been added here in the States since 1984 and it’s challenging to find formula without taurine (the HappyBabyOrganic seems like they do not add taurine). The Honest company had made claims that they did not have any but they got sued. Now, based on my research, it suggests that feeding infants a formula containing taurine for up to 12 weeks does not affect weight, height, head circumference, or behavior in infants.

I am from Europe and lots of infant formula do not have taurine and there is no research proving that is is essential to formula. Like mentioned above, the human body produces it at some point and cow milk does provides some of it (not a lot but some). My baby was probably getting too much of it. And… no-one tells you how much is added to it and… did you know you find it in a lot of fast-food? It gives you lots of energy eating crapping food!

Going back to my mom’s friend. The day they switched formula, their little girl slept and settled! And he shared that story with many moms and they have seen several babies change over night.

The very same night I switched formula on my little boy, he slept the whole night (7 to 7 with a 3 am feeding), he started to take longer naps, he was more relaxed, would cuddle on my lap, would hang out by himself on the map… the list goes on. The very night I switched, I got a different baby, one that wasn’t on the Duracell battery! He is still my sweet little boy but more relaxed! I guess it was too much for him. Some babies may tolerate it more than others.

I ended up ordering an organic German formula called HOLLE from this website https://babykindmarket.com/ but you can find some retailers on Ebay. No taurine! No crack baby anymore!!!

Do your own research and I am not suggesting that this is what could help your baby if he/she has the same symptoms but this is my experience and I wanted to share it because it has changed my life and most importantly the one of my baby. And there he is 🙂

  1. I’m so glad you found this out. Now that he’s settled, I’m hoping that you’ll be able to visit. We’ll be praying for you on your trip. Love Mom

  2. I was having issues with my 7 month old being super hypo active. He would go all day and only have 2 naps lasting 20 minutes each. He wakes constantly during the night and has never slept through. I went through his diet to see what it could be. I make his solids and anything I buy is organic so I knew it wasn’t that. I noticed that after a bottle he was all hyped up like someone had flicked a switch. I read the ingredients and saw taurine. In my head I’m thinking oh my god it’s like red bull. I am now weaning him onto cows milk with a vitamin supplement so he gets the same nutrition as in formula. I can not believe that babies milk contains this. When I think back my now 16 yr old was the same and I’m betting it was his formula as it too contains taurine. Hopefully with the switch my son will sleep through the night.

    1. Did the trick for us!! The first day I switched, it was like I had another totally new baby!!!

      1. Read the studies on Taurine. It does not make anyone hyper. It’s a relaxant if anything!
