O God, You are my God; early will I seek you; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. – Psalm 63:1

Have you ever been thirsty and nothing quenches it? You try water, tea, soda, or something else but nothing does it? This usually happens when we did not hydrate enough over a long period of time. Signs of dehydration include dry, sticky mouth, sleepiness, confusion, increased thirst, etc…Treatments? When it is not too severe, one can drink small amounts of water and stay in a cool room.

Sometimes, we can feel this way not physically but spiritually.  David explains he thirsts for God in a dry and thirsty land. Do you ever feel like you are in a dry and thirsty land? You wake up in the morning, look at the news at it appears like the world is falling apart. It appears like the world has become such a dry place with nothing good to offer. You go about your day and try to accomplish your tasks but it is like nothing satisfies you. It is like no matter what you do, you still feel thirsty for more. You run into a difficult situation, look for solutions but nothing cuts it? I believe that many times, many days, you and I feel this feeling: dry and thirsty.

Treatments? One can drink small amounts of water and stay in a cool room… well this applies to our souls as well. David said “therefore in the shadow of your wings I will rejoice (63:7). God’s wings provide protection for us. They offer protection from the heat of the sun, the world and everything that can burn us out. His wings provide a cool and out of the sun place in the shadow. Imagine a hen covering its chicks with its wings; nothing can happen to them. So, God provide this cool and refreshing place for us to stay. He also quenches our thirst. David said “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness” (63:5). In other words, my soul shall be satisfied with the richest of foods. How can we receive this satisfying food? We need to plug into the source. Just as we need to eat small amounts of food throughout the day and drink small amounts of water as well, we need to be plugged into the source of our satisfaction throughout the day. How do we do this?  David says in verse 4 “I will bless you while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name”.

Next time your soul feels dissatisfied, dried, emptied, thirsty, hungry… remember you need a refreshing place (under His wings) and some water and food that you can find in His presence through worship. Just slow down, lift up your hands, worship His name, and come close to the source of everything you need: Jesus.

“All my springs are in You” (Psalm 87:7). All you need is in Him. Joy, peace, comfort, love, healing,… whatever you need today…is in HIM.
